THE mystery of what happened to Burma’s saffron army, the thousands of monks who inspired a nation to rise up against a brutal regime, then vanished overnight, has been unlocked.
Taken from their monasteries in a wave of midnight raids, they have been held in primitive, humiliating conditions designed to break them down physically, emotionally and spiritually.
The account of an 18-year-old novice, who was taken from the Mingalar Rama monastery in Rangoon, reveals that while the military may be in physical control, the monks still wield a powerful spiritual weapon.

Burma’s state media says the country’s military ruler is willing to meet with pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, as the crackdown against pro-democracy activists continues.
State media reported Thursday that General Than Shwe told UN envoy Ibrahim Gambari this week that he is willing to meet directly with the opposition leader if she gives up her support for confrontation and sanctions against the government.
Gambari, who met with both figures during his trip to Burma, is preparing to report today to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on last week’s bloody crackdown in Rangoon.
Ban said Wednesday that Gambari delivered a strong message to the ruling generals. But the secretary-general said he could not call the trip a success.
Witnesses say the military government has rounded up more activists in night-time raids in Rangoon. State media today put the number of arrests over the past week at more than two thousand.
Burmese authorities today released a UN staff member along with her two relatives and driver who were detained Wednesday.
Some military officers are refusing to follow orders, and there are reports of dissension in the military’s ranks. One former colonel told VOA (in an interview in Bangkok) he fled Burma because he could not follow orders to use violence.
Burmese officials say the crackdown on pro-democracy protesters left 10 people dead. Dissidents put the number of fatalities at 200.
It is difficult to get complete reports from inside the country. Burmese authorities have blocked Internet access and have put restrictions on telecommunications and visits by foreign journalists.
The UN Security Council is expected to meet Friday to discuss the human rights situation in Burma.

U.N. worker arrested in Myanmar
BANGKOK, Oct. 3 — A local staff member of the United Nations in Myanmar and three of her family members were taken from their home in Yangon before dawn today as part of an ongoing crackdown on demonstrators.
Charles Petrie, the most senior official for the United Nations in the country, said a 38-year-old woman, her husband and two relatives were detained by security personnel at 4 a.m. He said he was not releasing their names to avoid jeopardizing their return.

သို႔ေသာ္ ယေန႔ ညေနတြင္ ျပည္သူလူထုက ျငိမ္းခ်မ္းစြာ ဆႏၵျပမႈ ျပဳလုပ္မည္ဟု စံုစမ္းသိရွိရသည္။
လံုၿခံဳေရးမ်ား ရွိေနေသာ္လည္း အသင့္ အေနအထား မဟုတ္ေတာ့ဘဲ သက္ေတာင့္သက္သာ ထိုင္ေနၾကသည္ကိုပင္ ေတြ႔ရသည္။
လမ္းအမ်ားလည္း ျပန္လည္ပြင့္သြားျပီး လူအမ်ား ျပန္လည္ သြားလာေနၾကသည္။
တပ္မ ၉၉ က ေအာင္ေျမသာစံဘက္မွ ဘုန္းႀကီးေက်ာင္းမ်ားကို ေစာင့္ၾကည့္ ထိန္းထားျပီး တပ္မ ၃၃ က ခ်မ္းေအးသာဇံႏွင့္ မဟာေအာင္ေျမ ဘက္တို႔တြင္ တပ္စြဲထားသည္။
“နာမည္ရွိတဲ့ လူေတြကို လိုက္ဖမ္းေနတာ၊ ေစာင့္ၾကည့္ေနတာေတြ လုပ္ေနတာ” ဟု ေဒသခံတဦးက ေျပာသည္။
“ဂမ္ဘာရီ ရဲ့ အေျခအေနကို ေစာင့္ၾကည့္ေနတာလည္း ပါတယ္” ဟု သူက ေျပာသည္။

Urgent call for nationwide NON-VIOLENCE campaign in Burma
The United Nations Secretary General’s office said Thursday that Burma has agreed to allow special envoyIbrahim Gambari to visit the country. President Bush and Southeast Asian leaders urged Burma to allow Gambari full access to all of the relevant parties. Gambari will be arriving at Burma on Saturday (Burma time).
Given this moment of golden opportunity, we, the members of OPERATION NON-VIOLENCE (BURMA) are organizing to carry out nationwide “NON-VIOLENCE” demonstration campaign in each and every major city and town.
This large-scale campaign will commence on Saturday (September 29, 2007) coincident with the arrival of UN envoy, and will be led and monitored by monks to ensure peace and stability. This peaceful campaign will result in critical talking points for Gambari to Burmese regime and hugely impact for a dramatic change in history.

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
In response to the deteriorating situation in Myanmar, the Secretary-General is urgently dispatching his Special Envoy, Ibrahim Gambari, to the region. He calls on the senior leadership of the country to cooperate fully with this mission in order to take advantage of the willingness of the United Nations to assist in the process of national reconciliation through dialogue.
Noting reports of the use of force and of arrests and beatings, the Secretary-General calls again on authorities to exercise utmost restraint towards the peaceful demonstrations taking place, as such action can only undermine the prospects for peace, prosperity and stability in Myanmar.
UN Security Council to meet on deadly Myanmar clashes

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) – The UN Security Council is to meet Wednesday over deadly clashes in Myanmar between anti-government protesters and the military junta, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said.
The meeting was to take place at 3:00 pm (1900 GMT), according to Kouchner, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council.
“We decided to call a meeting of the Security Council,” said Kouchner, adding that the emergency meeting had been decided at the request of European members of the 15-member council.
